Mainsheet Swivel Jammer

The Xenon is fitted with a Holt Wire Frame ball-bearing Swivel Jammer complete with a Holt 60mm Switchable ratchet with a 'D' shackle fastening to the swivel jammer. A small switch sited in the centre of the ratchet will apply or remove the ratchet action. This appears to be a similar unit to that in the Allen Brothers catalogue described as a Mainsheet Jammer without the ratchet (Part No.A4266H). Further reading suggests that there are two options for this jammer; a high version, fitted to my Xenon, and a low version. In strong winds we occasionally find that the mainsheet has cleated unexpectedly and this prevents a quick spill of the wind. It is possible that the standard (low) version is less suceptible to this problem. The 2010 price of this item is around £109.

The whole assembly is fastened to the strengthened centre deck moulding by 4 cross-head screws. Rotate the swivel to expose each of the screw heads in turn. When all screws are removed the assembly can then be removed for cleaning or replacement. Take care not to lose the ball bearings - a replacement unit costs around £109.

The performance of the swivel jammer can be altered by means of a 5mm hexagon socket screw, partially concealed under the spring supporting the ratchet. If the swivel is excessively loose it may be reluctant to follow you around during a tack, tighten this screw and the swivel will operate smoothly from side to side. Do not overtighten - the swivel should easily follow you around the boat during tacks or gybes.

Lubricate ball bearings with silicon lubricant. Using a spray can will also clear out grit etc avoiding the need to dis-asssemble the jammer.
